No. Catholics worship God alone. We honor Mary because of her unique relationship with Jesus and her faithful response to God.
The Church calls this honor veneration. It is fundamentally different from the adoration owed to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Why honor Mary?
Scripture gives us reasons to recognize her special place.
Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, calls Mary blessed and identifies her as the mother of her Lord. Mary herself says that generations to come will call her blessed.
Her response directs praise toward God:
“My soul magnifies the Lord.”
She rejoices in God her Savior and recognizes what He has done for her.
For Catholics, honoring Mary means acknowledging God’s work in her and the faithful way she received it.
What is the difference between honor and worship?
Adoration acknowledges God as our Creator and Lord, the source of our life and salvation. Jesus teaches that worship belongs to God.
Mary is a human person, wholly dependent on God’s grace. Her holiness comes from Him. The Catechism teaches that devotion to her should foster our adoration of God.
Why can it look like worship?
Statues, candles, kneeling, and prayers can understandably raise questions. An outward gesture alone may not explain what a person intends.
The distinction becomes clearer when we look at what the Church teaches and what the prayers express. Asking Mary to pray for us recognizes her intercession; adoration belongs to God.
Catholic devotion needs to preserve that distinction faithfully.
Mary points toward her Son
At the wedding at Cana, Mary tells the servants:
“Do whatever He tells you.”
Those words help me understand the direction of devotion to Mary. Her example encourages trust in Christ and obedience to Him.
As my understanding of the Eucharist and the sacraments deepened, I became more open to understanding Mary’s place in the faith. Discovering her connection with the Ark of the Covenant helped me appreciate even more deeply who Jesus is.
Honoring His mother has helped me turn my attention more fully toward Him.
